Most of my life I have been discouraged by the words "just do your best." I have often thought, what is my best anyway? At any one time, I know I can do better, or that I surely will do better in the future. So, what is, "best that I can be."

Recently, your Dad mentioned to me that to most people the words "just do your best" are comforting, because no standard of perfection is implied to them by the statement. All that anyone can do is what they are capable of doing at the time with the best of their intentions, in their present situations. Dad said that in the past I have held myself to an impossible standard of perfection - my "heavenly best"-(something impossible on Earth by the way). Perfectionism can be pretty discouraging and steal joy in life. ‘Been there done that.

Dad also noted that I don't hold the heavenly perfection standard to everyone else I meet, but try to assume others are doing their best at any one time. Others often hear me say; "everyone deserves their learning curve," in an effort to accept the efforts of others.

Realization: I deserve a learning curve too, and so, my dear, do you. We are doing our best as we learn, grow, and improve gradually. We can do our earthly best, grateful for God’s grace, leave heavenly perfection to God, and find His rest.

Love Ever, Mom

I'm not a perfectionist so I don't have half of your problems. Nice post but it's over a month old, did you fall off the planet or what?
